Fly and let fly

The "Fly and let fly" short film program invites viewers on a journey into the air. WHEN CITIES FLY (Germany 2017) takes us to Jordan. In the skies above the capital Amman, filmmaker Khaled Mzher discovers flying kites and children playing between buildings. The documentary THE ART OF FLYING (Jan van IJken, Netherlands 2015) shows us how starlings fly in flocks, drawing circles in the air. What language do birds speak? This question is raised by BIRDCALLS (Malcolm Sutherland, Canada 2006), in which a hand transcribes bird calls and other sounds onto paper. What do we see when we hear birds chirping, and where is the man with the dog in the film A MAN AND HIS DOG OUT FOR AIR (Robert Breer, USA 1957)? In CET AIR LA (Marie Losier, USA 2010), it's not just bubbles that fly through the room. At the end of the program, artist Len Lye lets colors fly in COLOR FLIGHT (UK 1938). (Stefanie Schlüter)
